Announcements NewsEarly SAB-142 results show promise in slowing type 1 diabetes progression
We were excited to see new research from SAB BIO presented at the Immunology of Diabetes Society Congress in Brisbane in April.
The research focused on a new medication called SAB-142, which is being studied as a way to help slow the progression of type 1 diabetes. The early-stage clinical trial was conducted with ATIC here in Australia and has produced some encouraging early results.
Why This Research Matters
Type 1 diabetes happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Over time, the body loses its ability to make insulin. Researchers around the world are working on treatments that could help protect these remaining insulin-producing cells, especially soon after diagnosis. The goal is to help people keep making some of their own insulin for longer.
SAB-142 is one of the treatments being investigated for this purpose.
What Did the Study Find?
Although this was a small, early-stage trial, researchers reported some positive signs.
People who received SAB-142 appeared to maintain more of their body’s natural insulin production during the study period, than those who received placebo. Researchers also saw improvements in blood glucose “time in range,” meaning participants were spending more time with glucose levels in their target range.
Importantly, the medication was generally well tolerated in the study.
These findings are still early, and more research is needed, but they are an encouraging step toward developing treatments that may help slow the progression of type 1 diabetes after diagnosis.
SAFEGUARD Trial Now Recruiting
ATIC are currently recruiting for the SAFEGUARD trial in Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, and New Zealand.
This is a larger study looking at whether SAB-142 can help preserve insulin-producing cells in people who have been recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
